The tampons with cardboard applicators are supposed to be able to be flushed. However, you should NEVER flush tampons or pads. They're not designed to be disposed of like that. It can back up your plumbing and I'm sure you don't want to explain that to your plumber once your toilet has backed up.

I know you are never suppoused to flush pads or any of the wrappings and applicators of tampons and such. Though I thought it was fine to flush the tampons after they are used?

Yes, it's true. Toilet tissue breaks down in water but pads and most brands of tampon don't, so if you flush them they can end up getting stuck and clogging up the pipes.

How come more people don't know about this?

Apparently it isn't ok even after you use them because it doesn't break down. It pollutes our water and leads to costly plumbing bills!

Hello? Have you ever been to a public bathroom ANYWHERE? Or read a box of tampons or pads? There are signs all over the place that say you can't flush them.

If your house has a private septic system, rather being hooked up to city sewer pipes, anything heavier than toilet paper will really screw it up. My father explained this to me, and my sisters, when each of us started our periods. So I stay aware that if I'm in a house in the country that flushing just isn't allowed.

No, it's not good to flush tampons (or pads, they're even bigger). The material they're made from makes it harder for water to immediately break it up so they can clog up your toilet in the long run. (It's also not very environment friendly.) The usual procedure is just to dump them in the bin. Unless you want to eventually explain to your plumber why your pipes are full of old tampons.
You just wrap them up in the wrap thing the brand new one you're opening comes in or if you don't have that use some TP. Then you place them in the bin (which your bathroom should have, if you're concerned about odor get a kind that has a lid and change it regularly).
