Pain, Bad Grades, Advice?

I'm a high school sophomore in an IB (advanced classes) program at a large school. I was doing great in school until this year, when chronic pain of mine spread from my lower joints up to my wrists. I haven't been able to complete a lot of assignments because of this, especially in morning classes, and so I'm failing a couple.

I haven't told my mother yet (she's a single parent, I'm an only child), andI realize that was a mistake, but none of the doctors can find a definite source for or help my pain, so she just sees it as whining.

How should I tell her I'm failing two classes? My GPA is high enough to stay in the program, but she has high standards and losing those two credits will make her furious... Is there a way I could convince her that my pain isn't just an excuse and that it's not a huge problem to drop classes? I just can't usually work through the pain...

Thanks for your time.

Re: Pain, Bad Grades, Advice?

You have to tell her, you have to prove to her that your pain isn't just some whining and that it's causing a major problem in your school life. She should understand that if she wants you to be successful or at least not in a very bad condition in your older years she needs to care for your physical conditions first. It could be serious.

Harsh moment now: Grow a pair and tell her. Your health should be more important than your grades. Your GPA is high so you shouldn't have a problem and the school should understand as well.

I hope I helped.

Re: Pain, Bad Grades, Advice?

Trust me, I understand chronic pain and how it can impact your life. I can certainly tell you that the longer you ignore it, the worse it will get. Keep talking to your doctors and get second opinions until someone finds you some answers and some relief. Even if they don't know the cause, they should at least be able to suggest something for the pain.

This is purely curiosity: have you been tested for autoimmune disorders like arthritis, Lupus, Lyme's Disease or even thyroid issues? And this question is one I've always been offended by so it's totally okay if it makes you mad too, but have you ever been diagnosed with depression? Obviously, if you're not comfortable answering you don't have to. I'm just being nosy because I have chronic pain myself.

What medication are you taking for the pain? If you're sitting there in pain all the time but not taking anything for it (even if it's just motrin) it's going to be hard to get people to take you seriously. This might sound harsh as well--you will need to figure out how to work it out, even with the pain. If writing aggravates your symptoms and you can use a laptop a lot better, then you need to talk to your doctor about writing a note so you can work that out with your school. If you need to be able to take pain medication during the school day, talk to your doctor about doing the paperwork so you can do that. If wearing a wrist splint helps make your wrists hurt less (like with tendonitis), go to the store and get some! Don't start by giving up, ya know?

Pain or not, just not doing assignments won't get you anywhere, and the more you let the pain control your life, the farther and farther it will all spin out of control. I mean, I get migraines so bad that gouging my eye out with a fork sounds like a better option, but I tell my teachers about my migraines on the first day of class and I ask them if I can wear sunglasses if I'm having a particularly bad day. Believe it or not, I had more teachers that were accommodating than those who weren't. When I gave in to my pain, I started getting C's (I'm an A student) and it really hurt my grades a lot to miss class and assignments and all that. So, I've learned to muscle through it and do what I can, even when I'm in an incredible amount of pain.  Even if your doctors can't give you an answer, talk to your teachers and see if they can help you out. Don't let this all control you.

Re: Pain, Bad Grades, Advice?

I really can't say anything except that you should tell her as soon as possible.

These things never clear themselves up. (Believe me, I should know)

Sorry I can't be of much help, but this is all I can say.
