Very Short!

I am not pregnant right now, but I am worried what's going to happen when I do.  I am only 5' 1" and have a short torso, but I have hips.  I am pretty tiny and don't have that wide of ribs.  Is anyone in the same boat as I am, but is pregnant?  Thank you!

Because you are short in stature, you are probably going to carry the baby more prominently. Basically, since you have such a petite body, the baby wouldn't be able to take up much space in your body, so it's probably going to push outward. Due to that, you're also more likely to have issues with lordosis, which is when your lower (lumbar) spine curves more than it should normally. This is very common (expected even) during pregnancy, but it's one of the causes of back pain during pregnancy.

Being short in stature doesn't mean that you won't be able to carry a pregnancy normally and to term. It also isn't a guarantee that your hips would be too small to have a vaginal delivery. In fact, you can be tall and still have hips that are too narrow! That is something your OB will measure when you're approaching term to make sure that a vaginal delivery is possible, and if not, they'll make plans with you accordingly.

It's totally normal to be worried! But I promise that short women have been giving birth much longer than tall women have, so no worries :smileyhappy:

Re: Very Short!

Thank you so much!  That makes sense and has helped.  Unfortunately, I already have lower back problems so pregagncy should be fun haha.  Again thank you! :smileyhappy:

Re: Very Short!

My mom is only 4'11" & when she had me and my sister and she didn't have any problems at all.  Honestly, people couldn't even tell she was pregnant until she was 7.5 months because she didn't put on much extra weight.  It really depends more on the person than their size.

Re: Very Short!

It shouldn't be a problem :-D

I'm 4'11" and I carried my son to 39 weeks. He was 6 lbs 5 oz when he was born. I gained about the recommended average of 35 pounds for my pregnancy.

My only real physical problem was that I had something called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction.

The Symphysis joint keeps your pelvis aligned is usually a fairly tight joint but for sufferers of SPD the ligament loosens too much and so the joint spreads and floats/moves. It's quite painful and I do believe it's more common in smaller women who don't have as much space for a baby to go as larger women with larger bodies/abdomens. Still no guarantee that you'll get it though. :-)

I am 4'11" and have THREE natural children.  The first two were c-sections.  But I am sure that I could have birthed them.  How do I know?  Because my third baby was born naturally, at home.  We had a planned home birth with her.  All three of my kids had birth weights over 8 lbs.  So yes, regardless of your size, you most definitely CAN carry and deliver a pregnancy.

During pregnancy, your stomach will stick out REALLY far (mine did).  You'll have the kind of pregnancy bellies where people ask you if you're having twins (when you're not) or  ask if your due date is just around the corner (when you're barely half-way through your pregnancy, lol).  This is how it was for me.  Why?  There was nowhere else for my belly to go but OUT! :smileytongue:

PS... oh, and my husband is 6'2"!
