Birth control advice

I have never bothered with contraception in my life, so I'm clueless. But after having my daughter a month ago, I definatly don't want to be getting pregnant for a good while!

I'm wondering about contraception, obviously loosing my baby weight I don't want to be on anything that will make me put on weight, so I'm worried about that. Bleeding a minimal amount would also be nice.
Any reccommendations?

Thanks x

Talk to your doctor about what is best for you. Understand that all birth control pills have a side effect of weight gain, but that doesn't mean it'll happen. It's just a chance. After you have a baby, you can expect to bleed for 2 - 6 weeks. If you're breastfeeding exclusively, it acts as birth control for up to 6 months. It increases the amount of estrogen in your body and it prevents ovulation from occurring. It also burns a considerable amount of calories, so with breastfeeding and exercise, you should be able to lose the baby weight with few issues.

If you do want to use a birth control pill, you're looking at using a progestin-only pill because the estrogen in a combination pill can decrease breast milk production. The great thing is that they're just as effective, but they tend to give you a period every 3 months. I'm actually not aware of a progestin-only pill that doesn't work like that. I was on Seasonique for a few years and I really liked it. I don't think I gained weight from it at all, and I think I experienced spotting between periods once.

Re: Birth control advice

I have been waiting to see you write about the progestin only pills, a girl wrote on another post that the pills are not as effective because they are designed for women who are breast feeding and the breast feeding already acts as a form of birth control to some extenet so the progestin pill (being less effective) is "perfect"

Ive been on the progestin only pills on and off for years because I get migraines so I can't take any pills with estrogen, and I know they are just as effective, and for me I would get a period every three months and then it stopped all together for about a year and then I started getting it again every month So I went off of it and got it out of my system and then I started it again, I got two periods in one month then skipped a month and then I just got it with ridiculous cramps. I feel like when I don't get for a while and then I do get it that its like a super period and all the PMS, heavy flow, and physical symptoms are 10x worse, does that make sense?

haha yeah progestrone only pills really are just as effective as combination pills I never got pregnant when I was on them for 6 months granted I took them every day at the same time but I found that for me I had a period about 2 weeks after I started them then had some light spotting on and off for 2 months than the other 4 months no bleeding what so ever

there are other options besides pills such as hormonal IUD which has progesterone, IUD with no hormones, implant (implanon) which lasts for 3 years and goes in the arm which is what I have and the shot personally for me I've found that birth control doesn't really cause weight gain but your eating and exercise habits do because yeah once I started watching what I ate and exercising the weight started to come off even though I'm on birth control

They are just as effective. I'm not sure why people think that they're not. They're not only prescribed for women who are breastfeeding.

I was on the progestin only pills for exactly the same reason, but I did notice that I felt like my body made up for lost time cramp-wise. I actually had to stop using them because I started developing some serious hypertension (high blood pressure) around my period. It was getting up to 160/100 and I felt REALLY sick. Now that I've stopped, I'm at 114/74. It's not a common side effect, though. My doctors were shocked that it was happening and they wanted to diagnose me with hypertension until I convinced them to let me stop the birth control and it's now completely resolved.
