Hello guys, so all my life I've gotten coldsores (or herpes 1) that appear on my lip every few months and are gone in a few days. Until now I've believed they were only contagious, and highly so, when I have the actual sore or when I'm in the tingling stage and can feel it coming on. I've looked into it a bit and some sites seem to say it's transmittable ALWAYS, even when there's no sore! Is this the case? I'm just confused, because I've been getting more intimate with my boyfriend and this would seem to conclude that we can't have oral sex, or except with a condom... Does this mean this is the way it's gunna be for the rest of my life??
Unfortunately, yes.. that will be your reality, for life. I also have HSV1 and it's taken a lot of soul searching to be comfortable with myself again. I hope in your research, you've come across literature that is not only informative, but encouraging. It's easy to become defeated, but you are still the same amazing person, inside.
As far as being contagious ALL the time, it is and it isn't. It's easier to transmit the virus when you do have an active outbreak (viral shedding), but can be done so without a sore or lesion. Think of it like a perpetual cold; sometimes you kiss your boyfriend and he never gets a cold, sometimes he may. By the frequency of your cold sores, I'm suprised you aren't on a suppressive treatment. (I have a prescription from Planned Parenthood, that costs 10$/90 pills at Target, so it's affordable!!) Just be informed, protect yourself, and be honest. It will be easier to decide what you are both comfortable with.
Okay great, yeah we've discussed it and we're gunna try condoms and see how they work out. I don't actually get them too often if I take care of myself, only once every few months, I've thought about going on pills but I don't really want to drug up my system... Thanks so much for the info and support!!! :)
:) Durex makes some yummy flavored lubricated condoms, I wouldn't suggest a regular latex condom - yuck!!!
Yes, I also get cold sores and learned that they are always contagious, much much much less when there is no sore but don't even think about kissing or touching anyone with it while you have the sore. So I just don't kiss my boyfriend when I get a cold sore. Also, we don't do oral sex at all because of it. Kinda sucks but he says he can live without it. I think I might try these condoms just for at least once in a while.
Also, you are getting them pretty often which sucks. Even though I get them once or twice a year max, I still haaaate it. So you should look into Lysine supplements since you don't want to do drugs. I only use them when I get one but if you see your doctor he or she might allow you to use a small dose every day. You can get them at a health store.
Here are reviews from some people: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientreview-237-LYSINE.aspx?drugid=237&drugname=LYSINE
But it's also important to looks at uses, side effects etc http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-237-LYSINE.aspx?activeIngredientId=237&activeIngredientName=LYSINE which is why it's good to consult the doctor first.
And also, I have a cold sore right now. I got it three days ago and I started a new topical ointment called Super Lysine + and I basically put it on like it says every 2 hours (or even more often) and it is amazingggggg!! It's the third day and it's almost gone. Here is the link. This is the Canadian version but I'm sure they have it where you live too, or something similar (ingredients).
If you don't want to take the supplements either, for sure go for the ointment. It's natural too. And also always keep your lips hydrated. Get a good chapstick and apply it often. Especially one that suppresses cold sores. This is the one I use now:
I got this cold sore because I let my lips get super dry for a couple of days and didn't take care of them. Learned my lesson now!
I get cold sore too, but I got them from sharing lip balms with my friends when I was little. All the girls in my little childhood friends group get cold sores. Never really gave much thought to it until your post :(
